I have read your devotional for writers, ‘Write’.
And you have it incorporated into a longer devotional, Rise, Write,
Shine. Your passion to share your writing tips as a
devotional intrigued me. Why not a regular writers how-to book?
I began blogging in 2010, before I published my
first book, as an unknown. Who was I to give writing advice to authors?
However, even though I was a newly published writer, I had studied the craft of
writing for over fifty years and gleaned at least a little wisdom. Over the
years, since 2010, I sometimes gathered enough courage to write a blog post
dealing with some aspect of writing. Since my blog is mainly devotional in
nature, I considered the writing posts devotional also. A friend suggested I
publish the blog posts for fellow Christians, and I thought, why not?
You also have
novels in series like “In the Shadow of the Cedar”. What was your inspiration
behind this project?
The books in this series (I’ve just finished the
fourth and last book. Yay!) are very loosely based on my mother’s life growing
up during the Great Depression and into the years during and after World War
II. Many of the events in the books occurred in either her life or the lives of
her siblings, although, of course, a lot of the material is completely
fabricated.
How many books have you written so far?
There are four books in the In the Shadow of the Cedar
series. I have also published Moonbow, a sci-fi
thriller and, of course, Rise, Write,
Shine. I also have a couple of short devos and
previously published Eternal Springs, although it’s
no longer available on Kindle.
Your most memorable writing
experience.
Most memorable? That’s difficult. There have been
several times that things click in my books, and I can only see it as a God
thing since it was not pre-planned by me. For example, my character Jay (Sarah
Jane) graduates from Auburn with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. I found out
later that the year she graduates in the book happens to be the year the first
woman vet from Auburn actually graduated.
When I finished Clothed in Thunder was also memorable. I think
producing a second book validated that I could actually do this writing gig and
wasn’t a complete fake. I danced around the kitchen island to One Direction’s Live While You’re Young.
Writing and family how do you cope?
Writing has to become a top priority, and family
members often have to be reminded of this. God comes first, family second, and
my writing third.
I let so many things go while I’m in the zone—such
as sleeping (Sometimes staying up all night!), cooking dinner (We eat a lot of
sandwiches), and even getting dressed (It’s much more comfortable to write in
pajamas).
Advice for
aspiring Christian women authors
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a
workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15
To do anything well, we must work hard, give it our
all. Once we put our hand to the plough, we must remain focused. The other
advice I would offer is to find time and a place to allow your creative juices
to flow. And, by the way, creativity flows best when you work hard.
What’s next after this?
I have a new cozy mystery series, Southern Pines, coming out
next year. Here’s an excerpt from the first book, Death Bark. Download two
