Day 23
He that hath no rule
over his own spirit is like a
city that is broken down, and without walls.
Proverbs 25:28
Self control strongly borders on
managing your emotions such as anger, excitement, fear, hunger, pain, envy,
depression, frustration etc.
There are several places in the Bible where all
these emotions resulted in devastating circumstances when not properly managed.
I will like to take Jabez for an example. There is a little detail in this story we may overlook. It is how he earned his name. His mother had given him this name because of the sorrow she
experienced while bare him.
She gave him "sorrow" because of the temporal pain she went through. that name is enough to change the course of his destiny.
And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother
called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.
1Chronicles 4:9
As Christians, we ought to be self controlled
during life’s storm so we don’t utter words we can’t undo.
And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died)
that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.
Genesis 35:18
2 Noteworthy
Points
1. Don’t lose your hold because others are losing
theirs. In difficult situations, it is often wise to keep calm and think.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but
God is faithful, who will not
suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation
also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
2. Pray over feelings that you can’t handle. God
knows our frame.
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the
feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us
therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and
find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:15-16
