After an inspirational message, there is a drive to go on and implement what we have heard. Like the parable of the sower, some seeds just don't make it to the intended destination.
Evangelism is good but you've got to be prepared, body, spirit and soul, right?
Just before you pack those bags, a few friendly tips on my list would come in handy. You are more than welcome to add to this list in the comments.
--> Be prepared to handle rejection: If you are rejected dust your feet and move on. Don’t
take it personally. You may be tempted to fall into needless arguments. Beware of those traps.
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye
depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
Matthew 10:14
The gospel is not by force. When it is rejected, remember you’ve
done your bit.
--> Allow the Holy Spirit Take the Lead: Sometimes an evangelist may be in an emotionally compromised
situation. People can be deceitful but only God can unmask hidden agendas.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
John 16:13
Also, the method of reaching out to this community may differ from that used in another community. God can use any means necessary to meet His people. It is up to the evangelist to follow His steps.
'What am I going to say?'
This is one of the most popular questions I have heard anytime the subject of evangelism comes up. You don't need to sweat it, simply allow the Holy Spirit do the work. Matthew 10:19
For
these reasons every evangelist should cultivate seeking God’s will even in
littlest matters.
Remember you are the vessel: when all the miracles and compliments start to
roll in, it is important for the evangelist to remember, he is but a vessel. And
a vessel is never greater than his maker.
Be careful not to think
the miracles and testimonies are your doing lest you take God’s Glory.
Have a Backup Team: we all need spiritual back up. We need praying friends and helpers in
ministry. We can’t do it on our own. If you notice in the letters of Apostle
Paul, he made reference to fellow labourers in the vineyard who were constantly
looking out for him.
Have a Willing Heart: the work of an evangelist is hard, whether through financial distress,
oppositions or life difficulties, without the heart of soul-winning, you are
likely to give-up before you actually begin. The kind of heart that yearns ‘Lord,
here am I, send me’ .
Knees in Prayer: The bedrock of every successful ministry is prayer. Jesus prayed, the Apostles prayed, we too ought to pray. Whether you are in the field or not, pray for those who are there doing the work of the kingdom in mission fields.
Pray for yourself before and after personal evangelism. When we pray for other labourers the path becomes easier for them and for us too.
Understand the Locals: It is wise to study the people or at least read about the location for our intended evangelism. It is important to know their culture, so you don't become offensive rather than helpful. In fact your knowledge might come in handy during the evangelism.
