Lessons from a Loving Father by Natalie

We didn’t grow up in a big house with an overflow of everything.  At the best of times we just had enough to get by.  Yet I believe and I am grateful that I had the best growing up.

As the Father’s day drew near, I reflected on many exemplary lessons I have learnt from my own father.

My Dad is my hero but by no means perfect yet he showed my siblings and me how to love unselfishly by being a man of integrity and worth.

My Father worked hard, still does; a man who supports his family financially, ensuring that he supplies their needs as best he can.

We always felt safe with our Dad. Like a safety net, he would never allow anyone to hurt his girls.

Many times he came home late, he still would share his plate of food with us (because we loved eating out of his plate) and he had time to make us laugh and to this day, help with cleaning up after eating.

Despite his late arrival, he would take time to inquire about our day.  He was never too tired to show interest in our school work and check up on our homework.

My Father never slacked in disciplining us.

We were never bribed with expensive gifts to be what we already were. It was expected of us to be respectable young ladies and we were expected to excel academically.

fathers do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Ephesians 6:4

I never saw him order his wife and kids around.  He was part of the family and taught us by actions how to serve one another with love and thanksgiving.

The love and affection portrayed by my Father was so attractive to us that we all looked forward to one day being spouses ourselves.

On critical lesson I learnt while growing up is,

The best teacher is one who teaches through his actions.

Just because you’re a Father gives you no right to enforce values and discipline that you don’t value or portray.
We never had reason to question because he led by example.

My Father showed us that it is ok when we sometimes fail.  Although we always tried our best, when we made mistakes, we were confident enough to be honest with him because he would not bite our heads off or beat us half dead.
Allow your kids to make mistakes and learn though their own experiences.

My Father allowed us to be individuals, he never expected us to live his dreams that he never accomplished. We were allowed to be ourselves.

fathers do not exasperate your children, so that they don’t loose heart.
Colossians 3:21

And to all young men who would be fathers someday……
Know this………..

A father does not just provide financially for his kids.  A father is actively involved in his kid’s life, ensuring that he loves them and guides them through this life.

He protects them, but not so that his protection harms them.

He prepares them for this world.

A good Father teaches through his own actions.  Not a dictator who doesn’t live what he preaches.

A good Father is one is there, every step of his child’s life.  Not one who is a spectator from afar and makes his kids feel abandoned and unloved.

A Father respects his children and speaks to them in a manner in which is acceptable and honorable.

Even if they have made him angry or has disappointed him, he still keeps calm and portrays the qualities of His own Father when he disciplines them

he who restrains his works has knowledge.  And he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
Proverbs 17:27

To all those who have been abandoned by their Father’s, or have none, remember it is no fault of yours.

The Lord says in that he will be Father to the Fatherless. He can only be your Father if you are His child.
Psalm 68:5  A father to the fatherless….
