7 Powerful Steps To Help
Your Kids Overcome Nightmarish Dreams
Have your kids ever
experienced nightmares? Are you familiar with these occurrences in your home? Here
is a scripture I love;
I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains
me.
Psalm 3: 5
There is vast
information about tackling nightmares. Below are a few basics, you should know about
dreams:
♣Dreams can be inspired
by God and of course can be manipulated by the enemy.
♣Like Joseph‘s
interpretation of Pharaoh’s dream, their meanings can only be sought from God (Genesis
41:15-16).
♣Dreams may be a
figment of our imagination i.e. they are not real.
♣Nightmares can result
from a combination of different factors.
I
don’t intend to delve into “dream-world” but to highlight ways to help our kids
overcome nightmares.
1. Avoid Late Night Movies.
Even as a kid I remember getting scared after watching not very pleasant movies.
Movie scenes become deep seated in our subconscious minds. So what do you do? Reduce
your kids’ exposure to late night movies.
2. Fear and
Anxiety. Fear of someone or a situation in our kids’ lives may find its way
into their dreams. Ask them about their fears. Be open to listen to their
concerns about an unfriendly teacher, a nasty classmate, a weird neighbor etc.
3. Friends and Their Interests.
Keep a keen interest in what your young ones discuss. What are their interests
in toys, games and books? What genre are they inclined to? Don’t overlook the crafty nature of the enemy through harmless activities.
4. Your General Response. Oh
it is just a dream! You say? This can lead to withdrawal from your child. I understand
you don’t want your child to dwell too deeply on their nightmare experience,
but be mindful not to close the doors to discovering the source of their fear
or anxiety. Your response should be more caring and positive and not unconcerned.
5. Does s/he need a counselor?
As a parent, you have to make your mind
up to seeking solutions to recurrent nightmares.
6. Power in Prayer.
Praying before sleep is one of the most potent ways of overcoming nightmares
and manipulated dreams. Have the
habit of praying over your children while they are asleep or just before they
go to bed. Encourage a praying habit in
your home. The bible says at the Name of Jesus Christ, every knee would bow (Philippians
2:9-10).
7. Word Power.
Teaching memory verses to help them overcome their fears is very needful. The Word
of God is the sword we use to overcome all the antics of the enemy.
A good place to start is Psalm 121, Isaiah
26:3 and Psalm 91.
Have
your kids experienced nightmares? How did they overcome? I’d love to read your
comments.
Remain
Blessed.
