We
often hear people say move on, let go etc but do we really move on? Can we
completely disconnect from our past? We all have pitfalls in life, many of us
have regrets of things we ought to have done, friends we lost along the way,
life we ought to have experienced etc. does life give us second chances? These
and many more questions run through our minds.
We
are responsible for the decisions we make either good or bad. Many of us had
made bad choices. There are also situations beyond our human physical control.
Our assurance is God knows our end from our beginning. Apostle Paul was
also in those shoes. He among all men understood how devastating dwelling on
past failures, regrets and disappointment can do to a Christian’s life. When he
gave his life to Christ, it became a great turn around.
Philippians
3:13-14 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but
this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching
forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the
prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Good news is, it’s not time to think of
all the “had–I-known” we have in life. It’s an opportunity to maximize all the
life and new opportunities God is giving us now. In other words, “the-now” in
our life is what matters most. What we do or don’t do now is
what is most important.
Does
this imply we just put all our past in the trunk of our cars, or put them in a
box safely tucked away, or dump them somewhere no one will ever know? How we
deal with issues in our past is important now we are Christians.
Some of these situations will require restitution, others forgiveness, some
healing, some deliverance, some apologies etc. to walk this path of
freedom as a believer you will need the following:
SIX WAYS TO HELP YOU LET GO
1. The Holy Spirit is our helper. You can’t take this road alone
you need your Comforter. The bible says we will find the grace we need to
overcome.
Heb 4:15-16 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the
feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet
without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that
we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
2. Forgive yourself and forgive others. When we hold on to people in our past
who have wronged us we also hold ourselves. In order, to experience peace you
need to open the doors to your heart with the key of forgiveness. Joseph was
betrayed by those he trusted most, his brothers. But he had to forgive. I know
there is nothing as being betrayed by those whom you loved or trusted. Yet God
requires that we forgive them so we too can be forgiven our sins.
Genesis 50:17 So shall ye say unto
Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin;
for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the
servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.
3. To ensure we live a fulfilling life we
need to learn from every situation that has come our way.
Doing things better and making better decisions as God’s people ensures we grow
and live the life God wants us to live.
Proverbs
10:14 Wise
men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.
4. Something we can also do is helping
others who are in similar situations now. Helping others deal with
what we have passed through in life serves as a source of comfort. When we
comfort others we also get comforted.
2Corinthians1:4 Who comforteth us in all
our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble,
by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
Galatians 6:1-2 Brethren, if a man be
overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit
of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one
another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
5. Get over what people think of you. It will take some time for them to
realize you are a changed person now. So, don’t eat yourself up. Keep trying to
be who God wants you to be. God has a way of making people who you have
hurt come around. Just keep praying about it. This is a compelling story. God
just helps you untangle some mess you find yourself in. When you really have
turn a new leaf trust God to lead the right people to you. He will bring people
who won’t judge you your way.
Act
9:13-15 Then
Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath
done to thy saints at Jerusalem: And here he hath authority from the chief
priests to
bind all that call on thy name. But
the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear
my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
6. Avoiding those who crushed you in the
past doesn’t always work.
Even Jacob went back to his brother Esau. He got tired of running. Jephthah
was rejected by is own brothers God made them seek him and they made him a
leader over them. You can also read their accounts in the scriptures Judges 11
and Genesis 33.
